Leveraging Advanced Technology for Faster Disaster Recovery

When disaster hits, councils need to move quickly. But moving quickly is not enough.

Results from regional councils 

The benefits of this approach are already being seen across regional Australia. 

Following a major rain event, Gympie Regional Council captured more than 3,000 damage points across a 2,300 kilometre road network within days. That allowed priority works to be identified early and funding submissions to be lodged within the first month. 

At Cassowary Coast Regional Council, after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper, $36 million in DRFA submissions were prepared in under three months, achieving a 93% average approval rate. Reconstruction was well underway before the next wet season. 

These outcomes show what is possible when councils have the right evidence, systems and processes in place. 

Recovery starts before the next event 

One of the clearest lessons is that disaster recovery does not begin after the rain stops. 

Councils with strong pre-disaster condition data are better positioned to demonstrate what changed, support eligibility, reduce disputes and move through funding processes faster. They are also better placed to keep control of delivery, reporting and community expectations as recovery progresses. 

Prepared councils do not need to rebuild the evidence base under pressure. They can focus on the work that matters: restoring access, repairing critical infrastructure and helping communities recover.
